Announcing Season 5: Nyora Station

If you tuned in for the season finale of our New Zealand adventure, you already caught a glimpse of what’s coming next. For the first time in the history of The Huntsman, we’ve managed to roll straight from one season into the next without a break. It’s a testament to the incredible dedication of our production team that we can pull off back-to-back seasons, and I am thrilled to officially announce that Season 5 of The Huntsman premieres on Sunday, July 26th.

These trips are physically and emotionally taxing; they demand immense planning, resources, and time. I want to extend a massive thank you to our team for their tireless work in bringing these stories to life.

Pursuing Passion Over Algorithms

When we launched our New Zealand series, I was uncertain about how it would be received. Venturing into the international hunting space was a risk. While New Zealand shares a deep connection with Australia’s hunting heritage, moving away from familiar grounds always invites skepticism.

In an era where many creators feel pressured to play to an algorithm to survive, I have always chosen a different path. I follow what excites me—the paths of learning and growth. I’m proud that our community embraced that journey, and I’m even more excited to show you where we go next.

Season 5: Home at Nyora

This season, we are returning to a place that feels like a second home to me and the entire team: Nyora Station in South West Queensland. Owned and operated by my close friends Brad and Lynda Johnson (who are also integral members of the Huntsman team), this property is a hunters paradise.

Over a two-week filming block, I was joined by Brad Johnson, Lynda Johnson, Scott Johnson, Jordan Asquith, Patrick Sager, Jurgen Schwanecke, Luke Dobson, Casandra Fleming & Kahlan Comberford. We scoured the property for buffalo, camel, donkey, goats, pigs, fallow deer, red deer, Rusa deer, and even ostrich.

Refining the Craft

Rather than chasing more “extreme” scenarios, the focus of Season 5 is on taking what we do and doing it better. We’ve broadened our approach by diversifying our tools—integrating compound bows and black powder alongside our rifles.

For me, the black powder rifle was a major highlight. It forces you to level the playing field, relying on iron sights and the unpredictable nature of the load. It demands that you get closer, practice more, and be more thoughtful in the field. It’s the essence of fair chase.

Nyora Station also presented an opportunity to improve our production quality. It sounds crazy, but having access to power from the grid opens up a whole lot of opportunities. More reliable power means better quality gear, which means better quality footage. For 5 years now I’ve been chasing a season with 4K, crystal clear, stable kill shots on camera. Anyone who’s tried to film hunts know that accomplishing this is the holy grail of a hunting production. This season I’m excited to deliver on this as we bring to you some of the best hunting cinematography you’ve ever seen.

This season is also about leaning, mentorship and growth:

• Jordan tackles his first buffalo hunt.
• Jurgen experiences his first Australian hunts, chasing wild goats and camels.
• Patty moves from behind the lens to in front of it, facing new challenges as he continues his growth as a hunter.
• KC makes another determined attempt at a elusive chocolate buck—a pursuit that has spanned years.
• And I attempt to harvest a billy goat and ostridge with a black power rife.

Meat and Trophies

Historically, The Huntsman has been unashamedly focused on the meat. We prioritize the harvest, which means if we see a doe, a hind, or a young stag, it is generally on the menu. We hunt to fill the freezer, and I know that approach isn’t everyone’s preference—many hunters prefer to chase specific trophies and remain highly selective about what they pull the trigger on.

However, this season at Nyora Station, we were truly spoiled for choice. The sheer density and quality of the game on the property allowed us, for the first time, to harvest large amounts of game for meat (we ended up butchering over 3,300 kg of meat from 18 animals) while at the same time being more selective in some situations.

Throughout Season 5, you’ll see us cross paths with some incredible animals: impressive fallow bucks, massive Rusa and red stags, big camels, stout billies, and heavy-weight pigs.

Let’s be clear: trophy animals isn’t the primary goal of this show. But anyone who says they don’t get a rush from seeing a truly magnificent animal harvested is likely kidding themselves. There is an undeniable excitement in seeing a large, impressive trophy when your hunting. After all, we don’t see impressive animals all the time, that’s why hunting them is high stakes, and why it’s exciting. So this season I’m excited that we will bring you a consistent run of truly impressive animals alongside our usual focus on the harvest.

Whether it’s for the freezer or the wall, this season captures the best of both worlds.
